A message From Ted Ciricillo It is becoming more and more important to create and implement a plan to protect your name and your business names on the internet. By purchasing .com, .net and .org (as appropriate) for your name and your businesses you are actively preventing third parties from registering these names and either setting up competing businesses, creating confusion in the marketplace or using the sites to disparage you or your business. Although ICANN created other extensions such as .info and .biz, those extensions have not really been successful in the internet marketplace and can, for the most part, be ignored. When creating and implementing your plan, Ciricillo Consulting be instrumental in assisting you in identifying and registering names which will provide the maximum benefit to you and your businesses in the current environment. What is ICANN up to Now!!!! A new wrinkle is now being added by ICANN, the entity that assigns internet names. Forbes recently reported that by the middle of next year, ICANN currently plans to allow custom domain name extensions to be registered by anyone. This means that in addition to the extensions you are used to seeing (ie- .com, .net, .org, etc.), almost any other extension you can think of can also be registered. In addition, there is no way to reserve or prevent trademarked names from being registered as extensions by the first person who wins the race to the registrar. Under this plan, your name, your business name and any combination of your business name and lines of business can be registered as extensions by anyone who might want to use your name for their own benefit or to create confusion or negative publicity for you in the marketplace. While there is no way to completely protect yourself by buying all of the many combinations and permutations of your name and business names, it would be prudent to create a plan prior to the implementation of this plan by ICANN for what extensions are most important to purchase when they become available. In addition, additional vigilance will be required to monitor what other sites are set up using these new extensions which might impact or draw business from your sites. I have attached a copy of the Forbes article for your review. If you have any questions concerning the selection of appropriate names to be registered to protect your valuable personal and business names, Ciricillo Consulting is available to assist you. Thank you, Ted Ciricillo Ciricillo Consulting
